We learned several things today that were pretty interesting. The little boy is actually an international recipient. I don't know what country because they weren't allowed to tell me. The doctor was guessing and saying Germany or France. The doctor who will be performing the procedure is the doctor who created the Bone Marrow dept. at Baylor 20 plus years ago. The recipient hospital has requested that we change the date of my procedure so that they have adequate time to prepare him to receive my marrow. They gave me 2 different dates, January 22 or 29th. We had to check with Jen's mom to make sure that the dates would work for her since she is going to be watching Madison while we were at the hospital. So, I will be calling my coordinator tomorrow to let her know my preference for the procedure date is January 22nd. The date can obviously change again or it may never happen because he won't survive the treatment to prepare his body. They did tell me that the little boy has Acute Leukemia and that pretty much this marrow donation is his last hope.
So, at this point I am free and clear for the procedure. Because the procedure is more than 30 days from today, I will have to have more blood drawn to make sure that I haven't contracted any diseases since I was tested today.
They did tell me that if the recipients parents agree and I agree that I could actually meet the family in 2 years (its only a 1 year wait for a U.S. donor/recipient match). So, who knows if that will happen.
So, we will continue to wait and see what happens.
